Pineapple and COVID-19

The humble pineapple has been known for having health benefits for generations. Bromelain, in particular has been researched extensively and pineapple has loads of this. Being a "superfood", one cant be wrong in regularly consuming pineapples - they taste great too!

More recently, there has been interests in the research community to find if the humble pineapple can also help in fighting virus infections, the COVID-19 in particular.

Researchers in Australia has made some interesting progress. A team of cancer specialists from St George Hospital in Sydney have repurposed a drug already developed to treat cancer patients. The drug, BromAc – which is made with an enzyme found in pineapples - was found to dissolve the spike proteins that Covid-19 uses to infect human cells. It has been repurposed into a nasal spray that researchers hope will stop the virus' spread from the nose and throat to the lungs.

We hope more such research will be developed into market products that benefit humanity.
